The three went on to form an Afro-pop band called Simply Hot and Naturally African (SANA). Black Coffee was more interested in making electronic music, so he left the group to learn more about making music. Nkosinathi was in the Red Bull Music Academy in 2003. Because of the exposure he got at the academy, he was able to get his first hit, “Happiness,” on the album DJs at Work.
In 2005, he started his career as a DJ by remixing Stimela, a hit song from 1972 by High Masekela. Black Coffee’s success led him to start his own record label, Soulistic Music, and put out an album called “Black Coffee.” On Black Coffee’s first album, artists like Busi Mhlongo, Hugh Masekela, and Thandiswa Mazwai were featured.
