J. J. Spaun has clinched his first major championship title with a thrilling victory at the U.S. Open at Oakmont, capping off a dramatic final round on Sunday.
Ranked 25th in the world, Spaun then made two more bogeys at the fifth and sixth holes, seemingly dashing his hopes of becoming the U.S. Open champion. He managed to make two pars before the turn, but then adverse weather conditions forced Spaun and the rest of the field to leave the course.
When the players returned after about an hour, it seemed Spaun had fallen out of contention, but he quickly made his presence felt. As others struggled with the waterlogged course conditions, Spaun excelled.
His putter was the key to his comeback, sinking two long putts at the 12th and 14th holes for birdie. His momentum faltered slightly with a bogey at the 15th, but his competitors were having an even tougher time.
