Thuso Mbedu (born 8 July 1991) is a South African actress. She played the role of Kitso Medupe in the Soap opera Scandal! and Nosisa in Isibaya She also acted as Boni Khumalo in Saints and Sinners and was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role in the telenovela Is’Thunzi which was called one of the most compelling television programmes on South African television, she recently starred in The Woman King movie.

Thuso Nokwanda Mbedu was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, in the Pelham neighborhood. When she was 4 years old, her mother passed away as a result of a brain tumor. Her mother had split from her father before she was born, so she was raised by her grandma. Thokozile was the name of her grandmother, and Gladness was the name of her mother.
Before her mother’s death, Thuso did not have a relationship with her father. Her grandmother was laid to rest in 2013, not long after her father passed away in 2012. Thuso is very close to her sister, Nomalungelo Mbedu.

She made her acting debut on the big screen in August 2014 when she played Boni Khumalo in the Mzansi Magic drama series Saints and Sinners.she then got a role as wild child and journalism student Kitso on Scandal in early 2015, Later, she appeared as Kheti in a cameo appearance on Snake Park, a SABC 2 teen drama series, which ran for two seasons.
The Mzansi Magic teen drama series Is’Thunzi, which debuted in October 2016, gave Mbedu, who had been jobless for six months, her first television leading role.
She played Winnie, a vivacious go-getter who wanted to marry a famous rugby player. Her dreams died when she was sent to live with her severe aunt in Bergville. She panicked while filming a rape scene. She was the only African nominated for an International Emmy in 2017 for her role as Winnie in Is’Thunzi.
Mbedu debuted in 2021 on Amazon Video’s The Underground Railroad. Barry Jenkins directed and produced the film based on Colson Whitehead’s novel.
Mbedu earned Gotham, Independent Spirit, and Hollywood Critics Association awards for the series, The Woman King, based on events in the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries, will star Mbedu and Viola Davis in April 2021. Mbedu’s debut film is The Woman King. Gina Prince-Bythewood will direct, with Dana Stevens co-writing.
